Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Royler Gracie > Jorge Britto > Dainis Nguyen
Professor/Sensei Dainis Nguyen is the head martial arts instructor at Durham Region's Team DNA BJJ in Whitby. He brings a diverse wealth of knowledge and experience from all of his years of training, coaching, and competing on the world stage in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Sambo. Dainis has been training for over 20 years, receiving his Judo Black Belt from Judo Canada in 2008 and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt from Professor Jorge Britto in 2015.
Dainis was a very active martial arts competitor in Judo, winning many provincial and international medals before he transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Dainis has continued his martial arts success on the competitive scene in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has become one of the most accomplished Canadian competitors at the Adult Black Belt level. He has won Gold numerous times at almost every single local competition(as a blue, purple, brown, and black belt) and has medaled at many of the highest level of international competitions such as the World Pro in Abu Dhabi and the Nogi Pan Ams in New York. Dainis has also won many super fights including a submission victory in the main event of the "Chokes by the Ocean" Pay Per View event in Nova Scotia. He was officially ranked #1 in Gi and Nogi for brown/black belt by the OJA in 2014 and 2015.
Dainis also represented Team Canada at the FIAS Sambo World Championships in Russia in 2013. Dainis' grappling skills have been utilized by many Mixed Martial Arts fighters who have hired him to help them tune up their grappling skills, he worked with UFC Fighter Chad Laprise for his Ultimate Fighter Finals against Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Chad ended up winning that match and the entire ultimate fighter series. He has trained with numerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Sambo legends and World Champions. Dainis even went to Brazil to train BJJ and Judo full time for a few months.
To this day he is still competing at the highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions as he says that competing in martial arts forces him to learn to continually new skills, eat healthy, and become a better version of himself - what he encourages all of his students to do. Dainis loves working with kids and adults alike and watching them improve and making positive lifestyle changes facilitated through Jiu Jitsu. He has helped many of his students to reach their goals ranging from: losing a significant amount of weight, adopting a healthier lifestyle, developing into successful competitors, gaining the confidence and skills to deal with bullies. Dainis specializes in teaching first responders + law enforcement the skills they need to keep themselves safe in their workplace, how to control someone without hurting them - our Basics BJJ class with self defense is where these skills are focused on. Dainis was presented with a Below 100 coin( www.below100.org ) by a police officer who trains here, the skills he acquired training at DNA literally saved his life on the job during a dangerous call. The Below 100 coin represents the goal to have less than 100 police officers die on the job in North America per year, they believe this is achievable largely through officers getting the proper training(Jiu Jitsu is an important part) and education. Dainis also a personal trainer and nutritionist and brings these skills with him on the mats when he teaches. If you are located in Whitby/Oshawa or the surrounding areas - be sure to check out Team DNA BJJ in Whitby(bordering Oshawa), you can be sure that you are training with the best and you will have access to the wealth of global experience and knowledge that you won't find anywhere else in Durham Region.
